Art as Therapy: Trauma-informed Creative Practices among Substance Use Disorders - Virtual CEU Training

About This Training
In substance use treatment, the creative process offers a unique path to address the neurobiological roots of addiction. Integrating art into clinical practice requires a clear understanding of ethical boundaries and trauma-informed safety.

This training focuses on the clinician’s responsibility to provide a contained environment. We will explore the vital distinction between Art Therapy and Art as Therapy, ensuring practitioners stay within their scope of practice while offering powerful, holistic tools for healing.

Participants will learn how to select specific art media to support emotional regulation: using structured tools for grounding or fluid materials for emotional release: to prevent flooding and promote sustainable recovery.

What You Will Learn

  • Differentiate between Art Therapy, Art Psychotherapy, and Art as Therapy.

  • Understand the neurobiological and emotional benefits of the creative process for those with substance use disorders.

  • Apply trauma-informed principles to media selection by choosing pencils for grounding versus watercolors for release.

  • Bridge the gap between traditional talk therapy and holistic recovery using low-barrier, high-success creative interventions.

Who Should Attend?
This training is designed for Social Workers, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Art Therapists working in addiction recovery, trauma-informed care, or community health settings who wish to ethically integrate creative practices into their work.
